Where are DuPont membranes manufactured?

Lately, I’ve got a bunch of messages from Indian folks in my backend, they’re like “Hey Monitor, can you write an article talking about how many global factories Dow FilmTec’s got right now?”

For anyone working in water treatment, Dow membranes—well we gotta call ’em DuPont membranes properly these days—you just can’t skip over this brand.

So I’m gonna break down their factories by three product lines: reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, and ultrafiltration membranes.

Today we’ll only cover nanofiltration and ultrafiltration first, I’ll save RO membranes for another post later!

Honestly speaking, if we’re talking about market share and the variety of nanofiltration models, Dow’s not really that standout. Compare it to old GE, which is Veolia’s now, Dow barely has any NF models to pick from. All their NF membranes are mainly made back in the US, Minneapolis plant only.

Now let’s move on to Dow’s ultrafiltration membranes. Out of these three membrane types, RO came out first, then nanofiltration, and ultrafiltration was the last one they launched. It kinda feels like they only rolled out UF just to keep up with market demand, y’know?

Dow first stepped foot into China with their RO membranes. Back then there was this engineering firm based in Zhejiang, they bought huge volumes of Dow RO membranes, and funnily enough their own UF membranes were pretty decent quality too. Later Dow wanted to grab a piece of the UF market, so they just went ahead and fully bought this Chinese company outright.

Strictly speaking, Dow’s only got one UF factory right now. All the SFP2880 and SFP2660 modules you purchase are shipped out straight from this Chinese plant.

Oh, and I almost forgot Memcor ultrafiltration, that brand got acquired too and it’s part of DuPont’s portfolio now. They run a manufacturing plant out in Australia.

Alright, that’s all I’ve got for today on Dow’s nanofiltration and ultrafiltration factory setup! Next time we’ll dive into their star product—reverse osmosis membranes, and count how many global production facilities they own.
